Clinical Experience & Expertise

  • Upper GI Surgery, in particular oesophago-gastric and biliary surgery

  • Major resection for oesophago-gastric cancer (over 500 resections with a mortality of 1.5% - below national figures as published by National Oesophagogastric Cancer Audit published by HQIP)

  • Surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease, hiatus hernia repair and achalasia including re-operations and second opinions

  • Oesophageal reconstruction and treatment of tracheo-oesophageal fistulae

  • Management of Upper GI complications of bariatric surgery

  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy – over 1000 operations since1991

  • General & emergency surgery

    • Repair of abdominal wall hernias and variety of other gastrointestinal operations.

    • Management of upper GI emergencies including bleeding, and perforation/damage to the oesophagus and stomach (spontaneous, iatrogenic and chemical injury)

Teaching, Assessment & Mentoring

  • I have extensive experience of teaching, training and assessment at undergraduate, postgraduate, local, regional and national levels.

  • Experience of teaching in different environments - bedside, wards, operating theatre and simulation

Service review, design and reconfiguration

  • I have extensive experience in investigation of Serious Incidents, and of individual and service reviews at local and national levels

  • I have experience of designing and commissioning new medical services (commissioning and staffing of new District General General Hospital in Chorley in 2001), service review (through the Invited Review Mechanism of RCS England) and service reconfiguration (oesophagogastric cancer services in the North West and North Central and North East London)

  • In the first batch of U.K consultants trained as Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Providers and member of the faculty of the first ATLS Provider Course to be run in the U.K. in1988

  • Member of the working party to look at nutritional support in U.K. hospitals thatresulted in the report “A Positive Approach to Nutrition as Treatment” commissioned by the King’s Fund in January1992

  • First surgeon to serve on the Appraisal Committee of NICE, from its inception in 1999 to 2005

  • Set up and ran the Northwest Surgical Higher Surgical Trainee Teaching programme from 1999 to 2010

Achievements & Awards

  • Establishing an Upper GI Unit at Chorley & Preston in 1999, which in 2009 became established as the oesophago-gastric cancer centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Network

  • Turning round the osephago-gastric surgical unit at UCLH on being appointed Head of Upper GI Services in 2011 and building it into a high-performing centre

  • Successfully leading the reconfiguration of oesophago-gastric cancer services in the North Central London and North East London Cancer Alliances 2012-2016

  • Setting up the regional SpR teaching programme in the North West and ensuring a high level of training of SpRs in the oesophago-gastric centres at Preston (1991-2010) and UCLH (2011-2017). Eleven SpRs trained in the centres have gone on to become Upper GI Consultants in the last 15 years

  • Thrice short listed for the Silver Scalpel Award for training in surgery

  • Distinguished Individual Award for services to the Association of Surgeons in Training, 2006

  • 'Living the Values' UCLH Excellence Award 2013/14

  • Holder of the NHS 'Gold' Clinical Excellence Award from 2009 until relinquishing it in 2012
